Dear Hossein,
Rita and I are doing better after our recent health challenges though our recoveries will take several more weeks of follow-up tests and doctor visits.
Dr. Sarapas, Candace Mouton and I have a meeting schedule next week to go over their latest analyses of the data we will be using in our collaborative research project. We have preliminary data from Congress 60 and from our U.S. sample and are deciding the best ways to compare the two patient populations. I am very pleased with the level of cooperation we have received from Congress 60 and we are also pleased with the U.S. data we have been able to obtain. Comparing this data will also provide a chance to do an update in the professional literature on the philosophy and methods of Congress 60. What you have provided through our email communications provides the foundation for that update.
One of the many things I like about our research endeavors is that it gives us a chance to vent our curiosity and to test what we think we know. What separates science from many other disciplines is its unrelenting skepticism and not just willingness but profound commitment to test all assumptions. In the addictions arena, there are thousands of daily declarations of alleged truth. It is science that challenges these with questions: Says who? Based on what evidence? Based on what quantity and quality of evidence? Has it passed the litmus test of review by other scientists? In science, what we know remains on probation until those challenges can be answered. In science, what we know is always open to refinements in truth based on new discoveries. Being curious by nature, I think that is part of what has kept us energized and engaged for all these years.
Congratulations on completing the grading of all the exam papers. I look forward to your videos of the coming shawl ceremonies. The number of Guides and Co-guides and the rigor of their training continue to inspire me. And thank you for the videos of the tree planting ceremonies. This is just one of many ways people in recovery in Congress 60 make amends to and serve their communities. It is also concrete evidence that the world is better, brighter, greener because of what each of us did while we were in it.
Do let me know the theme of the forthcoming International Congress on the Science of Addiction. Once I know the theme, I will let you know if I am able to contribute something for the conference. I do appreciate Shani’s continued willingness to make such presentations on my behalf. It was a great honor for me to participate in the panel at this Congress last year.
