Awareness is the key

Awareness is the key

Drug addiction is a devastating force that tears lives and families apart, and slowly kills the addicted person. The person using drugs will experience a great deal of emotional and physical pain, and sometimes this pain can be so severe that it will push the addict to do things that will damage him and others. The family and loved ones are put through similar emotional pain. Thus, families and loved ones will do everything to help this person overcome their drug addiction.

Generally speaking, “Help” can be defined as to give aid, be of service, provide support, to relieve, and to prevent. When an individual addiction is first discovered, people who do know the person do have some willingness to help. One of the most important problems that do occur is the lack of knowledge, or really knowing what to do. Many people will push these considerations aside and move forward making attempts one after the other in order to help the person. Because of all these unsuccessful attempts, the family and friends will become more discouraged and hopeless.

As an example, parents are attempting to help their child, who is addicted to drugs. They lecture the son, scare him, and make him promise to never use drugs again. The father later finds out the son was seen downtown getting high again. Now parents feel a sense of failure, and are once again unsure what to do. They might make further attempts; yet, will continue to see failure, and will feel a continued hopelessness, all due to one simple perspective. Congress 60 acknowledges that the first step in helping someone is to make them understand what the actual problem is. If you do not fully understand something, it will be difficult to solve any problems related to it. In this case, it is getting a full understanding of drug addiction. Once a person understands drug addiction, they can and will help the addict. For more information about drug or alcohol addiction, visit: www.congress60.org
