"In spring of last year, as I approached my 67th birthday, my opium consumption was out of control, I was not eating well, my diabetes was getting worse, my performance at work was not good at all, my relationships with colleagues were worsening. "I struggled with heroin addiction for most of my adult life. I checked into treatment of one kind or another in early 1999, not being able to quit for any length of time. Before coming to Congress 60, I knew I had a problem, but did not know what to do about it. While working with my guide at Congress 60, in supervised group discussions, educational workshops and meetings, and many other great programs, I was able to identify where I struggle and what my strengths are. The guides and members of Congress 60 then assisted me in coming up with a plan for life. At times it was a battle, but, solely through the time and patience of my guide, I was able to comprehend why I felt the way I did, what I needed to do to overcome these struggles, and continue to move forward. I participated in all aspects of Congress 60 program. Through hard work, I am a better husband, father, son, employee, and a delighted member of my community. "I find myself crying from time to time as the answer to the emptiness and melancholy in my life seemed to be emerging. Nonetheless, still somewhat mysterious, it is there and that is a milestone and a miracle. After discovering the limitations and narrow vision that I lived with when I came to Congress 60, 3 years ago, I look back at my time there. My revivification has been slow and gentle, but fairly steady with some dips and stalls along the path. Without all your support and assistance I could be out there still dying. I’m here to express gratitude for being heard with empathy, truthfulness, compassion, and benevolence. I cannot express enough how significant that was and how it carried me from day to day in that challenging time.
